Every year, Mother’s Day creates a concentrated disruption across temperature controlled and expedited freight networks. In 2026, that seasonal pressure is colliding directly with DOT Blitz Week, creating a potentially volatile stretch for carriers, brokers, and shippers alike.
The Mother’s Day Freight Surge
Mother’s Day is the single largest holiday for fresh flower shipments in the United States.
Most flowers sold domestically are grown in Colombia and Ecuador before being flown into Miami International Airport in the weeks leading up to the holiday. On average, roughly 20,000 tons of flowers move through Miami during this period. Once shipments arrive, timing becomes critical. Flowers require strict temperature control and rapid transportation, creating intense demand for refrigerated and expedited capacity across South Florida.
This seasonal push creates:
- Increased reefer demand out of Miami
- Pressure on team and expedited capacity
- Tightened truck availability across surrounding markets
As more capacity gets pulled into South Florida, rates rise quickly and coverage windows tighten across the region.
DOT Blitz Week 2026
At the same time, the industry is preparing for DOT Blitz Week scheduled for May 12–14.
Historically, this annual 72 hour enforcement event temporarily reduces available capacity as carriers sideline equipment or avoid movement during inspections.
This year, enforcement is expected to be more aggressive, particularly around:
- English proficiency requirements
- Non-domiciled CDL compliance
These areas of focus could disproportionately impact certain driver segments and smaller fleets.
Potential effects include:
- More trucks placed out of service
- Carriers choosing to sit out the week entirely
- Reduced participation from owner operators and smaller carriers
A Tight Market Gets Tighter
Mother’s Day already places heavy pressure on reefer and expedited freight. Adding DOT Blitz Week on top of that creates another layer of disruption during an already tight market.
With elevated rejection rates, rising spot prices, and produce season already ramping, this combination could create significant volatility across multiple regions and modes throughout mid May.
